Shopify vs Squarespace
Shopify vs Squarespace: Which Fits a Small Business?
Squarespace is known for polished templates and simple publishing, while Shopify is built around selling products. We work with Shopify and do not build on Squarespace, so we will also tell you when you do not need us.

What Should Drive the Decision
Brand Site or Store?
For a portfolio, a studio, or a service brand with a few products, Squarespace is often the cleaner fit. A store that lives on its catalog points to Shopify.
How Much Stock You Manage
As variants, locations and shipping rules grow, so does the value of Shopify's selling tools and its app store. A small catalog may never reach that point.
Which Fees Apply
Squarespace charges an online store fee on its Basic plan and none on Core and above. Shopify charges a fee on third-party payments only. Run your own numbers on both.
Side by Side
From shopify.com/pricing and squarespace.com/pricing, October 2026. Payment processing costs are separate on both. Check both pages for current terms.
| Feature | Shopify | Squarespace |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Basic $39/mo, or $29/mo paid yearly. Higher plans add features | Four plans, with a discount for paying yearly |
| Platform sales fee | 2% to 0.2% on third-party payments, none with Shopify Payments | 2% on Basic online store sales, 0% on Core and above |
| Digital content fees | Depends on the apps you use | A separate fee that falls as you move up plans |
| Design starting point | Themes built around products | Templates built around visual pages |
| Add-ons | A large app store | A smaller set of extensions |
| Strongest fit | Catalog-driven stores | Service brands and small catalogs |
| Do we build on it? | Yes | No |
