Headless Shopify
Shopify Headless Development: When It Pays and When It Does Not
Headless means your storefront runs as a separate application, with Shopify as the commerce engine behind it. Most stores do not need it, and we will tell you if yours is one of them.
- Fit check before any build
- Hydrogen or Next.js on the Storefront API
- Liquid remains our default recommendation

The Real Costs of Going Headless
You Own More of the Stack
With a theme, Shopify serves your storefront. With headless, the storefront is an application of your own, and hosting, deployments and monitoring all need an owner.
Apps Stop Working Out of the Box
Many apps add their features through a Liquid theme, so they will not simply appear on a headless site. Reviews, search and similar tools may need API work or replacing.
Editors Lose the Theme Editor
Your marketing team can no longer drag sections around in Shopify. Page editing has to come from metaobjects or a separate CMS, and someone has to set that up.
What a Headless Project Includes
- Fit assessment: Liquid or headless
- Storefront build in Hydrogen or Next.js
- Storefront API integration and cart
- Handoff to Shopify's checkout
- Content modeling with metaobjects or a CMS
- Replacements for apps that depend on a theme
- Server rendering, structured data and redirects for SEO
- Hosting, deployment and monitoring setup
How We Approach Headless
Question
We ask what you cannot do on a theme, and try to solve it there first.
Prove
If headless still wins, we build the riskiest part first to check the plan holds.
Build
We build the storefront, connect content and replace theme-based apps.
Launch
We test speed, search and checkout handoff, then point your domain at the new site.
